This Be The Verse

My favorite poem is This Be The Verse. In fact, it's probably the only poem I like. Can't recall anything else, that isn't a limerick*.
This Be The Verse stands out for a several reasons
1: The title does not occur in the words and is directly referencing it
2: It's a banger
3: hits that sweet point between human misery and the indomitability of the human spirit
4: a couple lines were on A Series of Unfortunate Events
5: it's got an anti-natalist bend

Anyways here it is in case the poetry foundation ever goes away.

This Be The Verse

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
The fill you with the faults the had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

* and limericks are not poems
